Des Plaines River Kayak Marathon May 2014
This is the second time we entered the Des Plaines River Canoe/Kayak Marathon. The race starts in Libertyville, and ends at the Dam No. 2 Woods park area in Mount Prospect.
We’ve had a lot of rain this Spring and the river was really high and the current was fast. The first half of the paddle was very challenging with frequent tree falls which were difficult to navigate around.
Having said this, all three of us made the full 18.5 miles of river, with a sense of accomplishment (if not a little shell shocked).
For this year, we didn’t have to hassle with the former Dam No. 1 — it’s gone. Also, there was a dam that scraped the bottom of our boat last year — the water was too high and we didn’t have to worry about it.
The finish area was very nicely staffed with volunteers who helped us pull out boats out; the race sponsored a nice cover band, and the food concession was just what we needed after a long race.
