Hofburg-Palace

I took a long weekend to Vienna and Prague with the kids.  Here’s a diary of our tour through Vienna.

Day 1

Connecting through Frankfurt, we landed in Vienna late morning Friday, our first day.  From the airport we took the Vienna Airport Line bus to Morzinplatz station in the city center, at the Northern edge of the Innere Stadt / Old Town.  From there, it was a 3 block walk to our hotel, Hotel Austria.

We were delighted that our room was ready, we checked in, then walked South toward St Stephan Cathedral / Stephansdom. We toured the beautiful church, went to the nearby Bank of Austria branch and got some money and then had a nice outdoor cafe lunch at the Do & Co Cafe on the Graben, a very posh pedestrian shopping street.  We enjoyed watching students from China perform Beethoven’s 9th.

Liz at RathausWe walked over to the Hofburg Imperial Palace; Mike took a short nap on the Heldenplatz public park area near the palace.   We walked to the Parliament building, got a refreshment at the Rathauspark, then walked over to the Albertina Museum. The museum was featuring works by Alex Katz; the museum also had a special show of art ranging from the work of Monet through Picasso, covering artists like Klimt, Renoir, Matisse and Chagall.  Very nice.

After stopping back at our room for a rest, we went to dinner at the Zwölf-Apostelkeller beer house.  We enjoyed the live music.  For desert, we found a really nice outdoor ice cream cafe:  Zanoni & Zanoni.  This turned out to be one of our favorite places!

Day 2

We slept late the next day; our Saturday started out with a light breakfast from the AIDA  Chocolaterie & Grosskonditorei on Graben.  We bought OBB Tram passes and took the subway to the Leopold Museum in the Museumsquartier district.  The featured artist was Egon Schiele.

We walked our way over to the Rathaus / Town Hall and had a late lunch in the beer garden in the Rathauspark.  This was alot of fun and very relaxing.  We were delighted with the Wieners and Brats.  From there, we took Tram 1 back to Schwendenplatz and walked back to hour hotel room.

St. Charles's ChurchWe signed up for an evening concert, so we wanted to sneak in one last visit to Karls Church / Karlskirch and the Soviet Memorial / Heldendenkmal der Roten Armee. We had very little time, but we knew how to use the trams.  We took Tram 2 from our hotel down and took the subway back.  It was worth the quick trip.

Next to our hotel, we had a nice outdoor dinner at the Cafe Restautrant Gutenberg. For desert, we went to Zanoni & Zanoni for ice cream — it is located right next door.

We finished just in time for us to walk over to the concert at the  Imperial Palace Hofburg Redoutesaal.  The concert featured music by Strauss and Mozart with a full orchestra and a group of fine opera singers.  This was alot of fun!

Recalling our prior trips to Salzburg and Vienna, we stopped at the Sacher Hotel and had some hot chocolate and Sacher-Torte.  It was a very nice night cap.  We were out late and we had an early morning the next day — we were heading to Prague!
